What is Mental Health Occupational Therapy?
Mental health occupational therapy (OT) is a client-centred, holistic approach that supports people experiencing mental health challenges to function well in daily life and engage in activities that bring meaning and purpose. It draws on a strong understanding of mental health conditions, systems and co-occurring factors, and uses occupation-focused and psychological frameworks to support routines, roles, emotional regulation, sensory processing, life skills, and participation in relationships and community. Mental health OTs work collaboratively with clients, families and other professionals to develop practical, personalised strategies that enhance independence, resilience and quality of life, recognising that recovery is personal, dynamic and lived day-to-day.
What does a Child and Adolescent Mental Health OT do?
A child and adolescent mental health OT works with young people, their families and other professional supports to address emotional, behavioural & nervous system regulation, daily routines, school participation, sensory needs and coping skills. Interventions are attachment and developmentally informed, and focus on building skills and facilitating environmental adaptations to improve everyday functioning, wellbeing and confidence across home, school and community settings.
Who practices Mental Health OT?
Mental health OTs are qualified occupational therapists who have undertaken additional training and experience in mental health fields. OTs who have completed a formal endorsement process through Occupational Therapy Australia are eligible to provide services under Medicare Mental Health Care and Eating Disorder plans, where applicable.
Who can see a Mental Health OT?
Anyone experiencing mild, moderate or complex mental health challenges may benefit from working with a mental health OT. As with any therapy, it’s important to find a practitioner whose experience, approach and values align with your needs - something best explored through an initial conversation.
How is Mental Health OT different from Psychology?
Mental health OT and psychology are complementary professions and often work well together within a person’s care team. While psychology primarily focuses on thoughts, emotions and insight through talking therapies, mental health OTs focus on how mental health shows up in daily life - including functioning, routines, relationships and participation. OTs address barriers to wellbeing using a blend of talk-based, activity-based and body-based approaches, supporting people to live well, not just feel better.
Now that we have that cleared up, I’m looking forward to working with you! Please reach out if this approach aligns with the needs of yourself or loved one and I’m happy to answer any further questions.
